These pyrite ammonite earrings are handcrafted in sterling silver with an oxidized, brushed patina.

Pyrite or pyritized ammonites form over time via mineral replacement. In this case the mineral replacing the original cellular structure of the ammonite is pyrite. Each of these pieces has lovely etched patterns and were found in France. I do not often see such nice pyritized ammonites that have not been sliced in half.

The settings are made specifically for the shape of these fossils and continue the spiral pattern in silver. They fit from front to back in the earlobes and form a sort of pseudo-hoop style with a stud closure instead (see images).

Each earring measures 20 mm, or just over 3/4 inch.
